This class offers students a deeper exploration of both direct (alla prima) and indirect (classical layering and glazing) techniques in oil painting. Spanning 8 weeks, the course is divided into two 4-week sessions, allowing students to take the full program or enroll in either half that suits them best. Throughout this course, we will be discussing theory and philosophy of various approaches along with studying historical examples.
Weeks 1-4 focus on classical painting approaches; building a strong composition/underpainting and grisaille (monochrome painting) along with learning how to layer and apply various color glazes to achieve depth and luminosity.
Weeks 5-8 focus on advanced color mixing and direct painting techniques with a more all prima (impressionist) approach; leaning into brushwork, effect, and color harmony.
Alongside these techniques, students will learn essential skills such as stretching and preparing canvases and other surfaces, mixing stable custom mediums, varnishing of a painting, and selecting frames.
